Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni (June 7, 1943–December 9, 2024) was an acclaimed poet, writer, educator and activist whose fearless voice helped shape the Black Arts Movement. Through poetry, essays, children’s literature and spoken-word performance, Giovanni explored Black identity, love, family, equality, resistance and the human spirit. A graduate of Fisk University, she later inspired generations of students during 35 years of teaching at Virginia Tech.
This original Ethnicitees “Cultural Wearable” preserves Nikki Giovanni’s remarkable legacy through Sean Ramon Montague’s hand-rendered illustration and traditional relief-block carving aesthetic, reproduced on apparel through high-resolution screen printing.
