Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, announcing freedom for enslaved people in the state—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. Celebrated by Black communities for generations and recognized as a U.S. federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth honors emancipation, resilience, and the continuing pursuit of equality.

Founded in 1990 by artist Sean Ramon Montague, Ethnicitees preserves and celebrates Black history through original linocut artwork and educational Cultural Wearables. Our Juneteenth design carries that mission forward, turning a powerful image of liberation into an invitation to learn, remember, and share our heritage.

Inspired by my good friend, model, and legendary photographer , Tobechi Tobechukwu, Ethnicitees presents this incredible tribute to our ancestors and celebration of “JUNETEENTH: FREEDOM DAY 1865!”

Symbolically displaying a former slave shattering the chains of bondage at the moment of freedom and Jubilation; June 19, 1865!

‘The front of the shirt features the powerful relief linocut illustration of a freed, empowered former slave by Artist and Company Founder, Sean Ramon Montague! The back of the shirt features a history of “JUNETEENTH FREEDOM DAY 1865”! Both the relief linocut image and biography are then screen-printed onto the shirt!

This powerful linocut image is inspired by the original, incredible photograph of photographer and model, Tobechi Tobechukwu from his “Reparations” series, used in a collaboration series with Ethnicitees, LLC.

Ethnicitees’ “Cultural Wearables” are artist made, educational apparel by Artist / Illustrator/ Print-maker Sean Ramon Montague, Owner / Founder and CEO of Ethnicitees, LLC.

Ethnicitees pioneered the concept of biographical Black heritage apparel back in 1990!

Two traditional printmaking processes are used in the manufacturing of Ethnicitees: Relief Block Printmaking in creating the designs and screen-printing applies the linocut portrait of the featured Black heritage legend and their respective biography; front and back!
