Sarah Vaughan (1924–1990), celebrated as “Sassy” and “The Divine One,” was a jazz singer and pianist whose rich voice, remarkable range, and inventive phrasing helped shape modern jazz. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she developed her musical skills in church before performing with Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine. Her artistry bridged bebop, ballads, and popular song, inspiring generations of vocalists. She was named an NEA Jazz Master in 1989.

Ethnicitees honors her musical legacy through Sean Ramon Montague’s original linocut artwork—Cultural Wearables that celebrate Black history through art and education.
